Dirkon – The Paper Camera

I saw this via Hack-a-day. It is a pinhole camera that you put together and it resembles a real 35mm camera. It was originally printed in a magazine and you follow the instructions and create your camera. I thought that this was a especially worthy hack considering what you can do when you have very little to work with.

During the 1970s, magazines published in Communist Czechoslovakia were controlled by the state, like the majority of other enterprises. Very few good magazines were available and were difficult to get hold of, so people would borrow and exchange them when given the opportunity. This also applied to magazines aimed at young people, which was probably one of the reasons why almost everyone from my generation, when we get on to the subject of pinhole cameras, has fond memories of the cut-out paper camera known as Dirkon*, published in 1979 in the magazine ABC mladých techniků a přírodovědců [An ABC of Young Technicians and Natural Scientists].

Get you mits on some free comics!

Don’t forget that Free comic book day is Saturday. I am planning on taking my son again this year. It was a lot of fun seeing my son pick out a few books last year, and a big dusting off some old feelings walking back into the comic book shop.

It isn’t just about the free stuff…pick up a few books too while you are there! Kill a Tree!

At the top of my site I have changed my graphic in keeping with my HHGG day (At least it is HHGG day in my world today) I had some people email me and ask where I got the pic of the Bable fish.

I got it from the BBC’s hitchhiker site. They have images and all sorts of things related to the the radio and tv shows.

Check it out here.
The picture is on the “Picture gallery” link on the left.

Google Sightseeing…

If you haven’t seen googlesightseeing.com, basically he is posting pictures of landmarks and such that he is finding with Google Maps Satellite images.
Some of the pictures that this guy is finding are awesome…so I decided to find something of my own.

This is Carowinds. An amusment park that just about everyone that had been a teenager in this area has worked at some time or another.

Aren’t you a little short for Darth Vader?

I thought of myself as a Star Wars Fan, but my status may be dwindling as we speak. These are true fans..no, actually I would say “Star Wars Freaks” (And I mean that as a complement).

At the recent Star Wars Celebration III the entire 501st Legion got together for a group picture.
I have to think that this has to be a logistical nightmare. One to get everyone together… and Two is that you have to handle the people that all want to be Darth Vader. I wonder this because remember when we were all kids and everyone wanted to be Indiana Jones or everyone wanted to be Luke…

Cool picture… even if there are about 15 Darth Vaders in it.

Click on the link below and have a look a the large picture that they have of all the members.
