Opera is Free! What about Firefox?

I like Opera. I have used it before on Linux before Mozilla Suite started getting legs. Now that it is free I see people wondering, “How will this effect Firefox?” I think it is more like how will this effect IE.

Well, I see it like this.
1. Competition is good.
2. More base for Standards, forcing IE’s hand

IE needs a kick in the pants, and it is getting one. I will go so far as say it is irresponsible for Microsoft to insist on IE as a users first and default browser and have it be such a security hole, and non compliant.

I know that they are working on it, but other projects like Firefox, Opera, Safari and Konqueror seem to keep up in a much more timely fashion. Microsoft better step it up. If the turn out another, just ok, browser I think it is lights out for IE domination.

Ubuntu has it Covered.

As you can see from the quote below, it looks like Ubuntu wants to release something that will compete with Windows Vista when it comes out. From what I have seen using Ubuntu…it could happen.

This release of Ubuntu will be supported for 3 years after release, and the Ubuntu developers are going to work as hard and as long as possible on Dapper Drake, as it’s what they’re going to release in response to MS’s release of Windows Vista.

Vent Cerf working for Google?

Wow, I wonder what they have in mind…

hsuwh writes “Google has hired Internet pioneer Vint Cerf away from MCI as its “Chief Internet Evangelist”. “He is one of the most important people alive today,” said [Google CEO Eric] Schmidt, who has been friends with Cerf for more than 20 years. “Vint has put his heart and soul into making the Internet happen. I know he is going to jump right in here and start shoveling out new ideas for Google.””
